Chase Jarvis Does It Again
August 16, 2008Man, I wish something like this would take place in Chicago. I’m sooo jealous.
“…30,000 square feet of shooting space, 25 models, 4 stylists, a breakdance crew, a freestyle ramp complete with BMX riders, 7 fully professional lighting stations, and a whole lotta positive vibes…”

A Day Off
August 13, 2008Finally had a day off from work last Sunday. August is stacked with weddings. Four weddings down, four to go. What a great learning experience.

Danialle and I started the day with some breakfast and periodicals at Beans and Bagels. After breakfast, we went home, picked up Kaboom, and took him to the dog beach to swim in the lake and run off some steam with other dogs. Lance (brother-in-law) and Coen (nephew) met us at the beach a few hours later to hang out and play in the sand. We also walked over to the nearby skate park to watch some skaters strut their stuff. Fun times.
After leaving the lake, we dropped off Kaboom and made our way over to a local bar where my sister-in-law, Jamie, works. We ate some pizza and had a drink (first drink is free on Sundays. Woot!). I’ve been enjoying Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy lately. Danialle had a virgin (she’s prego!) Bloody Mary.
Later that evening, Danialle and I stopped by our favorite video rental store and rented Penelope, starring Christina Ricci. Great flick. It had a very Tim Burtion-ish feel to it; bright colors and fantastic cinematography. Check it out!

Behind The Image: Memorial Portrait Of A Child
August 8, 2008
Photograph of a ceramic memorial portrait decorating a young child's grave marker at Bohemian National Cemetery, Chicago.
While visiting National Bohemian Cemetery, in Chicago, I came across a grave marker displaying a ceramic memorial portrait of the young child buried below. What caught my attention was the young boy’s frilly outfit and the photographer’s choice of props for the image. I am fascinated by this portrait
In my opinion, I think these memorial portraits give grave markers a level of personalization that anyone passing by can connect with, regardless of time. If I chose to leave behind a grave marker, it will definitely have a humorous and most likely ridiculous memorial portrait of myself displayed on it.

Armed with a 70-200mm lens, I was able to completely blur the background of the image, leaving only the subject matter focused. The memorial portrait itself is not that sharp due to the process used during that time period to transfer the image onto the ceramic plate. In addition to the memorial portrait, this grave marker also has an opened book made of stone resting on top (left side of above image) .
